HAMDEN – Mayor Curt Balzano Leng is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Sullivan as Deputy Police Chief for the Town of Hamden. Sullivan has served as a member of the Hamden Police Department since 1995, starting as a Patrol Officer and rising through the ranks, attaining the rank of Lieutenant in the Special Operation Bureau in 2018. Mr. Sullivan has been serving as Acting Deputy Police Chief since being named by Mayor Leng on November 14th, 2019.
Mr. Sullivan, in addition to his various roles as a Patrol Officer, Investigator, Detective, Sergeant and Lieutenant, also served the Department as a member of the HPD Special Response Team (1997-2018), the FBI Task Force (2002-2003), the State Wide Narcotics Task Force (1999-2004), as President of the Hamden Police Union (2005-2013), and as a Union Pension Representative (2013-Present).
Mr. Sullivan is also a highly decorated member of the Hamden Police Department, receiving more than 40 citations and recommendations for honorable service, excellence in the line of duty during his career. June 23rd, 2020 will mark Mr. Sullivan’s 25th year of service to the Town of Hamden.
Commenting, Mayor Curt Leng said, “John Sullivan has proven himself an outstanding member of the Hamden Police Department. He’s demonstrated exceptional skill working with residents and fellow officers alike, especially his efforts working with our residents in the Community Police Division. He’s a conscientious and compassionate officer who knows how to get things done, and compliments Police Chief Cappiello as a strong team leading our Hamden Police Department.”
Mr. Sullivan remarked, “I am excited for my new role at the Hamden Police Department. I’m looking forward to working with the Mayor, the Legislative Council members, and the command staff at our Department. I grew up in Hamden and it is very gratifying to be able to serve the Hamden community in my new capacity. We have highly trained and professional officers here at the Hamden Police Department and I’m eager to work with them to provide the highest quality of law enforcement for the citizens of Hamden.”
Mr. Sullivan continued, “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to continue the extensive community policing programs here at the Hamden Police Department. The Mayor, Chief Cappiello, and I are also in the process of establishing new community police initiatives with the goals of building community relationships and increasing prevention.”
Police Chief John Cappiello commented, “I look forward to working with John. We have similar views as to the future of the Department and how we can better serve our community, and I believe we make a very strong team.”
Mr. Sullivan’s appointment will be sent to the Legislative Council for action at the March 16th Legislative Council Committee Meeting. Pending Committee approval, a vote of the full Council will proceed on April 6th, 2020.
