HAMDEN, CT, August 24, 2005—Mayor Carl Amento and more than 700 vehicles turned out on Saturday August 20 to mark the grand opening of the 19th Splash Car Wash, at Connolly Parkway and Dixwell Avenue here.

Mayor Amento and Nancy Dudchick, Executive Director of the Hamden Chamber of Commerce, presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Splash president and co-founder Mark Curtis. The Hamden Splash facility also houses a quick-lube and oil change service.

Although morning skies were cloudy, by day’s end some 720 vehicles had been washed at the newest Splash, under a half-price opening day promotion. Each hour, Splash staffers gave away gift bags of car wash services to customers, and provided free popcorn and beverages. One lucky motorist won free car washes for life.

“Hamden is a great community. We’re very pleased to be its newest commercial establishment,” said Mark Curtis, who founded Splash Car Wash with partner Chris Fisher in 1981. “We had a wonderful opening day turnout and look forward to a long relationship with the city.”

Splash is the biggest and fastest-growing car wash operation in Connecticut and the 11th largest in the United States. It has expanded from a single location in Greenwich to 19 outlets in Connecticut and New York.

Curtis and Fisher developed the concept of washing cars by hand along a conveyer line. Hence the company’s motto: “Your car deserves a better wash.” Roughly half of Splash’s centers are hand-wash facilities; the rest are automated Express Wash locations using ultra-soft cloth and New-Glide foam. Such innovations have helped the company earn the title of #1 car wash in Fairfield County for seven years in a row, as judged Fairfield County Weekly.

Early on in their partnership, Curtis and Fisher decided to pledge considerable time and energy to charitable causes. Since its first fund-raising event in 1985 with the Greenwich Association for Retarded Citizens, Splash has raised more than $1 million for many local organizations and charities throughout Connecticut and New York.

After Splash celebrated the opening of its Hamden location on Saturday morning, several of its staffers, along with Mark Curtis and Mike Christie, Director of Marketing for Splash, went to Tom Hayden Field in Fairfield. There, Splash was the title sponsor of a softball marathon and silent auction to benefit the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Splash donated to the hospital all of the August 14 revenues from its car wash at 484 Tunxis Hill Road in Fairfield.

“Our involvement with St. Jude’s is reflective of Splash’s commitment to give back to the communities in which we live and work,” said Christie. “It’s also our way of saying ‘thanks’ to our many loyal customers.”

Splash’s other Connecticut car washes are located in Bridgeport, Cheshire, Cos Cob, Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, Milford, Norwalk, New Haven, Stratford and Wilton. The company operates four car washes in New York: in Bedford Hills, Carmel, Mahopac and White Plains.
