SPECIALIZED CANCER REHABILITATION CENTER CELEBRATES OPENING ON WHITNEY AVENUE Therapeia Lymphedema Center 3074 Whitney Avenue • Hamden, CT 06518 P 203 • 230 • 2800 F 203 • 230 • 9791At a recent ribbon cutting ceremony for Therapeia Lymphedema Center, it was time to celebrate the specialized therapy for clients afflicted with lymphedema in a comfortable and empathetic environment. Hamden Mayor Craig Henrici, Economic and Community Developer Dale Kroop, Nancy Dudchik form the Hamden Chamber of Commerce, owner Linda Hodgkins, and therapists Janice Catrone and Lakesha Lord were on hand to formally mark the re-opening of Therapeia in its new facility on Whitney Avenue in Hamden.
Janice Catrone, Mayor Henrici, Linda Hodgkins, Lakesha Lord As occupational therapists at Gaylord Rehabilitation Hospital years earlier, Hodgkins and Catrone were treating numerous patients who had survived the trials of cancer treatment, only to develop a condition called lymphedema. People who have had cancer treatment may be at risk for lymphedema, a buildup of fluid that results in swelling of the arm or leg and other potential complications. Anyone who has undergone the surgical removal of lymph nodes or other surgery or radiation that affects the lymph nodes or lymph vessels may develop this lifelong condition. Although lymphedema is most commonly associated with cancer treatment, it can also be congenital or associated with conditions such as obesity. “My heart went out to these patients, for all they had been through. And knowing what I knew about the therapy – I wanted to not only provide them with intensive, effective care but I knew it didn’t have to be done in a sterile, clinical setting. These patients could enjoy and even look forward to their therapy. They deserved some TLC,” said Hodgkins. With that vision in mind, Hodgkins and Catrone opened Therapeia Lymphedema Center. The center offers Complete Decongestive Therapy in a unique setting. This therapy for reducing lymphedema has three main parts: a specialized manual therapy to move the fluid, bandaging to reduce the edema, and a compression garment worn to maintain results. But what makes Therapeia different than most treatment settings, however, is the spa-like décor and atmosphere of the facility. According to Hodgkins, research evidence is beginning to show the impact that environment can have on healing. “The manual portion of the therapy feels good, so why not complement that with a relaxing environment.” At Therapeia, this means amongst other things: comfortable linens, steamed towels, heated massage tables, and soothing music. Since their doors opened, the therapists have enjoyed the grateful response from patients they have seen - many of whom have gone for years without knowing what their condition was or how to treat it. Hodgkins and her staff are excited as word continues to get out to area doctors, nurses, and residents about the center – that certified therapists are available locally to treat and manage this often times unfamiliar and undiagnosed condition.
