Mantis Kungfu Academy Opens in Hamden
The newly opened Mantis Kungfu Academy in Hamden provides a traditional Chinese martial arts program. Students gain an understanding of the physical, mental, spiritual and cultural aspects of traditional Chinese martial arts.
Classes include youth and adult Kungfu, Tai Chi and San Shou (Chinese kickboxing). The Academy specializes in Praying Mantis Kungfu, an elegant yet practical self-defense martial arts style developed in the Qing Dynasty and Wu-style Tai Chi, which teaches awareness of one’s body and one’s balance. The goal of the children’s program is to teach self-discipline, balance, and coordination.

The master instructor, Shifu Ilya Profatilov serves as vice-president and board member of a number of international martial arts organizations in China and Russia. Mr. Profatilov hopes that by teaching the general public that students will become proud standard-bearers of a centuries-old tradition, in addition to improving their self-esteem and physical fitness. He hopes that students will gain not only an understanding of the physical aspects of the sport, but also something of the Chinese culture and the long history of martial arts in China.
