National Night Out (NNO)
What Is National Night out?
Join us Tuesday, August 1st, 2017 for the 34th Annual National Night Out! Every year, communities over all 50 U.S. States dedicate one night to building relationships with community leaders and joining forces to heighten crime prevention awareness. This year over 16,500 communities from states, territories and Canadian cities will participate! The Town of Hamden, which has been nationally recognized for its National Night Out (NNO) in the past, invites you and your family to join us for a fun, free evening of activities, entertainment and resources at Villano Park on Winchester Street from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Over fifty community organizations and businesses will be represented. Some of the exhibits will present information and resources on early childhood education, mental health services, health and wellness and safety. The exhibitors will distribute information, interact with community members and offer an activity or giveaway. In addition to arts and crafts there will be games, raffles, child i.d. cards and other activities. Mayor Curt Balzano Leng and Police Chief Thomas Wydra will offer opening remarks.
DJ Rachel will be spinning family friendly tunes throughout the evening. Live performances by local talent including The Neighborhood DoSo Dance Band, Dance Unlimited and Mount Zion Guarding Angels Drum Corps & Drill Team will keep folks entertained. P.L.A.C.E. on the Go! will be offering multicultural art activities. A free cookout will be offered including hot dogs (fresh from the grill), fresh fruit, water and refreshing sno-cones. With support from the Town of Hamden's Mayor's Office, Fire Department, Public Works and Parks it is sure to be a great evening!
Each year Hamden Youth Services, Public Works, the Parks Department and the Hamden Police Department work hard to provide a National Night Out that Hamden can be proud of. As part of the larger effort of NNO, Hamden also participates in Project 365, which is a yearlong project that challenges participating communities to make real steps in improving the quality of their neighborhoods. Each year, the National Night Out gives towns a chance to celebrate the progress of the past year and renew efforts for more improvement in the upcoming year.
We are proud to say that for the past eight years, Hamden's National Night Out event has ranked in the top 40 in the entire nation compared to other communities our size. This year, Hamden's National Night Out will be better than ever! Our theme this year is Clean, Safe and Beautiful Neighborhoods. A number of Hamden town departments, organizations, businesses and civic organizations led by Hamden Youth Services Bureau and Hamden Police Department will band together to clean trash and graffiti to create a safer and more welcoming town over the course of the next year. In addition, we will be focusing on beautification. This past year we installed two Free Little Libraries.
This year we will expand our beautification efforts with youth-driven public art.
