The Town of Hamden facilitates permits and licensing primarily through the Viewpoint Online Permitting Portal. Certain applications are not yet integrated with the system and require other means of submission.

The Hamden Building Department facilitates permits and licenses through the Viewpoint Online Permitting Portal. Please refer to the information below, including "Required Inspections", prior to submitting an application. If you have questions regarding your permit application, contact the Building Department at 203-287-7160.

A building permit costs $24.26 for the first $1,000 of construction cost and $24.26 for each $1,000 of construction costs thereafter.

Commercial construction projects (all buildings except detached 1 or 2 family homes) require Fire Marshal Plan review, approval and inspections. Fire Marshal Plan Review fee (including site inspections) is $55 for the first $10,000 of construction cost and $5 for each $1000 of construction costs thereafter. Fire Marshal Plan Review and associated fees are integrated in the relevant Building Permit application.
Before applying for a building permit, make sure you have (if needed):
- Planning and Zoning Approval
- Quinnipiack Valley Health District Approval (QVHD Website)
- GNHWPCA Approval (GNHWPCA Website)
Plans:
- Commercial Projects: 2 sets of plans need to be submitted: One each to Building and Fire Marshal
- Residential Projects: 1 set of plans needs to be submitted to Building. Small projects can upload plans with the appropriate application.
After receiving your permit:
ALL INSPECTIONS MUST BE SCHEDULED BY CALLING THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT AT 203-287-7160.
INSPECTION REQUESTS CAN NOT BE REQUESTED VIA THE ONLINE PORTAL OR BY EMAIL.
Contractors requesting inspections shall give the inspectors a minimum of 24 hours notice of their needs.

Information:
To apply for Fire Alarm Permits, Sprinkler Permits, Hoods/Ducts with Suppression Systems visit the Building Department and apply for the relevant permit there. Fire Marshal Review is integrated with those permit applications:
- Fire Alarm System: Apply for an Electrical Permit and check Fire Alarm under Work to be Performed section of application
- Sprinkler System: Apply for a Plumbing Permit and check Fire Sprinkler under Work to be Performed section of application
- Hoods/Ducts & Suppression Systems: Apply for a Mechanical Permit and check appropriate box under Work to be Performed section of application
- Tents: Apply for a Building Permit and check Tent - temporary under Type of Work section of application
Fire Marshal Plan Review fee is $55 for the first $10,000 of construction cost and $5 for each $1000 of construction costs thereafter. Fire Marshal review fee and inspections for tents is $30 per tent.
FM UST-AST | Underground / Aboveground Storage Tank Installation or Removal Permit - Use this application if you intend to alter, clean, repair, line with a protective coating, remove, abandon, place temporarily out of service, or otherwise dispose of a flammable or combustible liquid tank. Permit Fee: $50 per tank on residential property / $100 per tank on commercial property. |
RECORDS | Use this application to request records from the Fire Department and/or Fire Marshal. |
FM Operations and Materials Permit | To maintain, store, use, or handle materials; to conduct processes that could produce conditions hazardous to life or property; or to install equipment used in connection with such activities. |
FM Operating Permit | Use this application to request inspections of buildings for licensing requirements. Permit Fees vary from $40-$80 depending on occupancy type. |

Legislative Council approved fee changes for 2023 below is a summary of these fees.
Sidewalk Permits - covers work associated with driveway aprons, curbs and sidewalks in the town’s right of way.
- All sidewalk contractors must obtain a Hamden Sidewalk License issued by the Engineering Department (apply in person)
- $350.00 one-time fee.
- Valid for one calendar year.
- Sidewalk permit fee: $100.00
Excavation Permits covers all operations that will require excavation within the Town’s right of way, backfilling and restoration.
- Excavation Permit fee: $195.00 up to 200 Sq. Ft. or $250 per 500 Sq. Ft. or portion thereof for long trenches
- Permanent Patch Fee: $1000 + $11.00 per Sq. Ft for Local Roads and $15.00 per Sq. Ft. for Collector or Arterial Roads.
- To determine sq. ft. the following formula is to be used:
(Length of cut) x (Width of cut) = Sq. Ft.
Larger excavations may require additional fees at the discretion of the Town Engineer.
