Tanglewood Marionettes, The Dragon King

Saturday Family Entertainment Series
Tanglewood Marionettes, December 2nd at 1PM

Hamden – The Hamden Arts Commission in collaboration with Hamden’s Department of Arts, Culture, Recreation and Wellness is proud to present the Tanglewood Marionettes’ performance of The Dragon King as the third event in the Saturday Family Entertainment Series.

Founded in 1993, Tanglewood Marionettes is a nationally known touring marionette theater based in New England. Large, beautifully hand-crafted marionettes, colorful sets, and integrated lighting and sound create a fully immersive theatrical experience. Our highly skilled puppeteers have spent many years perfecting their art, delighting audiences of all ages as they bring our repertoire of classic tales to life. Tanglewood Marionettes is the recipient of two UNIMA awards, puppetry's highest honor.

An underwater fantasy based on Chinese folklore, The Dragon King tells the tale of an intrepid Grandmother who journeys to the bottom of the sea in search of the elusive Dragon King, and the answers to why he has forsaken the land above. Colorful sea creatures, an exciting adventure, and a wise and gentle protagonist who uses empathy and kindness to complete her quest. All this and more can be found in this UNIMA Award-winning production.

Educational Objectives:

  • To introduce the audience to a variety of puppetry styles, as well as elements of stagecraft commonly found in larger-scale theatrical productions;
  • To show the audience the mechanics of marionette manipulation by allowing the puppeteers to remain in full view throughout the performance;
  • To explore various themes, including the role of oral tradition in society, and age versus youth in both American and Chinese cultures; and
  • To spark interest in and generate the further exploration of Chinese folklore, music and culture.

All performances in this Saturday Family Entertainment Series are from 1PM to 2PM and will take place at Thornton Wilder Hall in the Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Ave where there is ample free parking. Tickets will be available at the door only, and are $3 for adults and $2 for children, cash only.
