[ARCHIVED] Fees at the Transfer Station

Fees at the Transfer Station

Hamden – Several years ago, the Town installed a scale at the Transfer Station with the intent of charging a fee. The cost of disposal for municipal solid waste has increased dramatically over the years and will continue to rise in the future due to the closing of many landfills. Our goal in charging for the use of the Transfer Station is not to punish users, it is to stop the abusers.

Our employees regularly see rented box trucks bringing loads of trash to the Transfer Station with taxpayers responsible for the disposal. Additionally, the policy to enter the Transfer Station has been that you must have a Hamden driver’s license. However, this policy is easily circumvented by having a Hamden resident in the passenger seat.

The Administration is recommending a small fee for municipal solid waste of $0.06 per pound for amounts 200 pounds or less, and $0.10 per pound for amounts 201 pounds and greater.

This pricing places Hamden at the low end of the pricing spectrum for smaller amounts of solid waste, and at the higher end of the spectrum for larger amounts of solid waste.

Organic material such as leaves, brush, and tree debris 200 pounds or less is free. Organics weighing 201 pounds and greater will be $0.06 per pound. The outstanding permits for brush will be honored.

Municipal Solid Waste and Bulky Waste
200 pounds or less - $0.06 per pound
201 pounds or more - $0.10 per pound

200 pounds or less – free, no charge
201 pounds or more- $0.06 per pound

While these fees will not fully cover the cost of running and maintaining the Transfer Station, they will contribute to our revenue and make us competitive in the region. The Town will continue to provide curbside pickup and bulk trash pickup at no additional charge.

Pending approval from the Legislative Council, the fee schedule will go into effect upon full implementation of the necessary software and hardware.
